Overview

Tesla has grown to become one of the most popular vehicle manufacturers globally. Their growing popularity can be attributed to the fact that this company produces some of the most dependable electric cars you can find on the market today.

Besides producing highly dependable electric cars, Tesla vehicles are also equipped with some of the most advanced technologies. One of the most standout features is the Sentry Mode – an antitheft feature that constantly monitors activities and happenings around a Tesla vehicle.

However, one issue with Tesla vehicles is that they lack some of the traditional features that you will find in regular vehicles. And one of these features is the spare tire. Tesla vehicles don’t come with a spare tire or a provision to store one. And this is also the case with the Tesla Model Y.

Is There Room for a Spare Tire in the Tesla Model Y?

A flat can happen at any time whenever you are driving. And when this happens, you may want to swap the flat with the spare and drive to the nearest tire shop. But, as mentioned above, the Tesla Model Y doesn’t come with a spare tire. And as expected, there’s no designated storage for a spare tire.

However, if you are the type of driver that always prefers to have a spare tire around, there are several options for storing one in the Tesla Model Y. Let’s take a closer look at some of the storage options for a spare tire in the Tesla Model Y.

Trunk

The Tesla Model Y comes with approximately 76 cubic feet of cargo space. As you can see, there’s enough room for storing both small items like groceries as well as bulkier items like a spare tire. And when it comes to storing a spare in the trunk of the Tesla Model Y, you have two ways that you can go about it.

Flat in the Trunk

First, you can store the spare tire flat in the trunk. As noted above, the Tesla Model Y comes with a spacious trunk. Hence, you have enough room where you can store the spare tire by placing it flat. Even after placing the tire flat in the trunk, you will still be left with adequate space to store some additional supplies.

You won’t have to make any adjustments or modifications to your Tesla Model Y with this placement. However, this will only become an issue if you are going on a long road trip, where you have to haul lots of gear and accessories.

In such a case, you will have either to leave the spare behind or find somewhere else to store it in the car so that you can accommodate the extra provisions you have to bring along for the trip.

Vertically Behind the Rear Seats

Second, you have the option of placing the spare tire vertically behind the passenger seat. With this placement, you will attach the spare tire to the rear seats. If you are going for a long road trip, storing the spare tire in the trunk will limit the available space for the supplies you intend to bring along.

At the same time, you can’t afford to leave the spare tire behind, especially if you are going to a remote area, miles away from civilization. In such a situation, this placement method will come in handy.

For this placement method, you can simply attach the spare tire to the middle seat. You also have the option of cutting a hole into the sub-compartment, where the tire can simply drop into.

Cutting a hole into the sub-compartment for the tire to drop into will result in better visibility. However, this method will require you to make some modifications to your Tesla Model Y. Also, it’s a little labor intensive.

But at the end of the day, it provides you with an option of carrying both your spare tire and the necessary supplies that you intend to bring along for the trip. Hence, you don’t have to choose one or the other.

Lower Compartment

Another option that you can explore for storing a spare tire in your Tesla Model Y is the lower compartment or sub-trunk. The only issue with this method is that the sub-compartment’s floor prevents you from placing the spare tire seamlessly. Again, you will have to make some modifications to your car.

For this method, you will have to get rid of a bump on the sub-compartment’s floor, which will prevent you from hiding your spare in the compartment. To do so, you will have to cut out some of the foam underneath. And when you do that, you will get around three inches of additional space.

You simply need to find a platform for placing the tire. Fortunately, a piece of Styrofoam will be enough for the job. Also, you may need to use a heat gun for softening the trim and obtaining the form that you want. Again, a heat gun is readily available in local hardware stores, in case you don’t have one at home. You may also need a pair of scissors to cut some of the material.

With the additional space you’ve obtained, you can then hide the spare tire in the sub-compartment. And the spare will sit flush. While this method is a bit tedious and time-consuming, it provides one of the best storage solutions for a spare tire in the Tesla Model Y. Besides, it will not affect the available cargo space in any way.

There are several videos out there you can follow on how to do this modification. And, all the tools and materials needed for this modification are affordable and readily available. By doing so, you will have unhindered storage space for a donut space, without compromising on available trunk space.

Wrapping It Up

As much as the Tesla Model Y doesn’t come with a designated area for storing a spare tire, there’s plenty of room in the car when you can store one. You can experiment with any of the ideas we’ve discussed in this guide and then choose the method that works best for your situation.
