Michelin Tire History
The Michelin brand is a company with a rich history back to the late 19th century. The company was founded in 1889 by Edouard and Andre Michelin, the Michelin brothers. The Michelin brothers grew the company into one of the world’s largest and most respected tire manufacturers in the world.
The brothers entered the tire industry in 1891 when they developed a removable pneumatic tyre. This revolution helped revolutionize the motorcycle industry. In 1895, Michelin developed the first Michelin guidebook, which helped motorists find places to eat and sleep while driving.
The guidebook eventually evolved into the Michelin Guide, a highly respected restaurant guide that is still published today.
In 1900, Michelin produced its first automobile tyre and the company became a leading tire manufacturer for both cars and bicycles. Michelin’s reputation for quality innovation continued to grow throughout the 20th century.
During this time, the company introduced a number of technological advancements, such as the radial tyre, which was released in 1946. The radial tire helped improve handling and performance while it also increased the lifespan of a tire.
Over the years, Michelin has expanded its operations to include a wide range of tire products, including light truck tires for passenger cars, trucks, airplanes, and even bicycles.
Today, Michelin is a leading tire manufacturer with tire plants in over 170 different countries. The company remains committed to its founding values of innovation, quality, and sustainability.
Michelin produces tyres for a wide range of needs, and Michelin tyres has you covered if you are looking for a high performance tire, or tire for your light truck.
Official Tyre Supplier
By allocating adequate tyres to sporting events, Michelin has become an official sponsor of many different sporting events.
One of Michelin’s most high-profile official supplier agreements was with Formula 1. Michelin has a checkered past with F1 racing. During the 2005 United States Grand Prix, a Michelin Tire blow out led to a driver crashing into a wall.
The driver had to withdraw from the race, and since the Michelin boss couldn’t guarantee the safety of its tires, 14 cars that were using Michelin tires had to withdraw from the race, leaving only six Bridgestone cars to participate.
In 2006, Michelin exited F1 racing, handing the reins over to Pirelli. Michelin has expressed interest in coming back to the sport, but has failed to do so despite great effort.
