But, is this the case? Well, we outfitted a Ford Escape with a set of this tire and conducted a series of tests in different conditions. And from our tests, we made the following observations:
The Scorpion All Terrain Plus delivered an outstanding performance on dry tarmac. When driving at lower speeds, it felt as if were using an ordinary set of all-season touring tires.
During the entire test drive, the tire responded to driving inputs accurately and fast, making it easy to move around and navigate tight corners.
Even when you push your vehicle to the limits, you will not experience any serious issues with this tire.
Its stability was outstanding while straight-line tracking was exceptional. Also, the braking was solid while traction and grip were more than adequate for driving on dry tarmac.
Compared to other all-terrain tires, we can confidently say that the Pirelli is up there with the best in the category.
After assessing its dry performance, we then decided to examine how the Scorpion All Terrain Plus can handle wet and slippery surfaces.
Fortunately, this tire didn’t disappoint. As earlier mentioned, Pirelli has outfitted this tire with numerous lateral grooves throughout its tread surfaces.
And these tread grooves played an important role in reducing the risk of aquaplaning. We didn’t experience any loss of grip or traction at any one point, even when driving on excessively wet and slippery surfaces.
The situation was the same on damp roads. The Scorpion All Terrain Plus felt sticky on the surface, making it easy to handle corners. Braking distances were short, steering response was outstanding, and high-speed stability was great.
Overall, the Scorpion All Terrain Plus surpassed our expectations. With the Scorpion All Terrain Plus, you are assured of a safe driving experience in wet, slippery and damp conditions.
Performance in Slippery Conditions
As earlier noted, the Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus comes with the three-peak mountain snowflake symbol (3PMSF).
And for a tire with this symbol, you expect it to deliver outstanding performances in snowy conditions and ice-covered roads. But is that the case with the Scorpion All Terrain Plus?
When subjected to snowy conditions, the Scorpion All Terrain Plus didn’t hesitate. While it may not be the best tire for snowy conditions, its performance was more than adequate.
The traction and grip were adequate, the braking distances were short and it felt confident when tackling corners.
With that said, you shouldn’t expect this tire to replace dedicated winter or snow tires. So, if your area experiences heavy snowing for prolonged periods, then a proper winter tire may be the best choice.
Considering its aggressive tread pattern, most people will expect this tire to perform well in off-road conditions. And that was exactly the case during our test drives.
Driving with this tire on hard-packed surfaces feels as if you are driving with dedicated off-road tires. It felt confident and surefooted, without any noticeable loss of grip.
From our experience, we noticed that this tire can handle light muddy conditions. But, they don’t have the features to handle thick and deep mud.
Overall, the Scorpion All Terrain Plus remains a capable tire for driving on hard-packed surfaces, loose sand, gravel and light muddy surfaces.
As previously mentioned, the Pirelli Scorpion All Terrain Plus is built to be used 95% on-road and 5% off-road. With such a profile, this tire should deliver a fairly comfortable on-road experience.
And that’s exactly how it performed during our test rides. While it wasn’t the quietest tire on the highway, the noise wasn’t excessive.
We only experience intrusive noise when driving over rough surfaces. Also, the ride was fairly refined on smooth pavement. It only became an issue when we were driving on rough surfaces. Overall, the Scorpion All Terrain Plus should perform well for everyday driving.
