About the BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2
When it comes to choosing a mud-terrain tire, most people today opt for a tire that can deliver a rugged off-road performance, minus the noisy, uncomfortable ride on the pavement.
And the BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 is one such tire. It’s one of the company’s best performing off-road tires for jeeps, SUVs, trucks, 4x4s and other off-roading vehicles.
According to the manufacturer, the BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 is engineered to deliver aggressive off-road performance, outstanding tread life and reasonable on-road comfort.
So, if you are looking for mud tires that come with minimal negatives that come with using on the pavement, then the BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 will be a good choice for your needs.
Design Features and Technologies
As mentioned above, the BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 is engineered to deliver rugged off-road performance, combined with a quiet and smoother on-road ride.
To achieve these objects, BFGoodrich has equipped this tire with the following key features and technologies:
Off-Road Tread Compound
BFGoodrich has outfitted this tire with a Krawler T/A KX-inspired tread compound, featuring independent tread blocks and linear flex zones.
The state-of-the-art tread compound in this tire helps to optimize its traction, thus making sure it can perform well in almost all conditions.
At the same time, the linear flex zones, enable the tire to contour itself based on the object it’s rolling over, thus ensuring that it can traverse rough and rugged terrains.
Larger Tread Voids
If you take a closer look at this tire, you will notice that its tread voids are considerably larger than its previous iteration.
These larger tread voids are designed to enhance the tire’s self-cleaning capabilities. Hence, in case you encounter deep or slushy muddy conditions, you can trust this tire to pull your vehicle through.
Heavy-duty Sidewalls
BF Goodrich has also equipped this tire with heavy-duty sidewalls, which supply additional traction, especially when you are climbing rocks.
At the same time, the bruise-resistant sidewalls help to protect the tire against cuts, snags, punctures, bruises and other forms of damage, which may be occasioned by the rough elements found in off-road terrains.
Sturdy Interior Construction
Inside the BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 are two steel belts, which have been reinforced with polyester tread carcass.
With this construction, you can expect this tire to withstand rugged driving and handling. The sturdy interior construction also helps to enhance the tire’s durability and tread life.
Performance
The BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 is marketed as a mud-terrain tire, meaning it should perform well in off-road terrains.
According to the manufacturer, it should also deliver decent on-road manners. So, does it match up to expectations? Installed a set of this tire on a 2020 Nissan Pathfinder to assess its performance, and I made the following observations.
Off-Road Performance
The BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 is a step ahead of most of the other tires in its category when it comes to off-roading.
It delivered one of the best off-road performances that I’ve witnessed so far. I tested it over various terrains and surfaces. And it never disappointed me.
With a set of this tire on your vehicle, you can handle almost any terrain out there. Whether you encounter boulders, stumps, sand, gravel, or mud, you can trust this tire to get the job done.
However, the BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 didn’t excel when I encountered extremely loose dirt, especially when driving at higher-than-normal speeds.
Overall, it’s a great performer for anyone who is going on an off-roading expedition. It can comfortably handle almost anything that you will encounter.
On-Road Performance
With its outstanding off-road performance, most people will expect this tire to be extremely uncomfortable on the highway.
However, that’s not the case. As much as it produced some road noise on my way back, the levels were tolerable.
Also, I didn’t experience any jarring, which is usually the case when driving with mud tires on the highway.
With the BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2, you won’t need a tow rig. It will take you to your off-road adventures and back home comfortably.
Warranties and Guarantees
The BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 comes with a six-year materials and workmanship warranty.
Under this warranty, the company commits to replace your BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 tire, if it becomes unusable due to materials or workmanship defects.
For the replacement, BFGoodrich will either replace your tire with a comparable new one free of charge or do it on a pro-rated basis.
Free Replacement
If your BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 is removed from service during its first 2/32-inch of the original usable tread or within 12 months from its purchase date due to materials or workmanship defects, the manufacturer will replace it free of charge.
BFGoodrich will also take care of the tire’s mounting and balancing charges while the buyer will be responsible for applicable taxes and miscellaneous service fees.
Prorated Replacement
If your BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 becomes unserviceable due to workmanship or materials defects when more than 2/32-inch of its original usable tread is worn or after 12 months from its purchase date, the manufacturer will replace it on a prorated basis.
Under the pro-rated basis, the buyer and the manufacturer will share the tire’s replacement costs.
An authorized BFGoodrich tire dealer will determine how much you will contribute towards the tire’s replacement by multiplying the percentage of the original usable tread worn off the tire by its current selling price.
You will also pay for the tire’s mounting and balancing charges, as well as applicable taxes and miscellaneous fees.
For instance, your BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 tire may become unserviceable after three years, due to materials or workmanship defects.
Assuming that the percentage of the original usable tread worn off the tire is 60% and the tire is currently retailing at around $300, your replacement charge will be approximately $180.
Coverage under this warranty extends for up to six years from the date of purchase or until the tire wears down to its tread wear maintenance indicators – whichever comes first.
Warranty Exclusions
The materials and workmanship warranty for this tire is a limited one. Therefore, some tires may not be eligible to be replaced.
Simply put, as much as your tire may be removed from service due to an eligible condition during its warranty period, the manufacturer may decide not to replace it.
According to BFGoodrich, any tire removed from service due to abuse, accident or misuse will not be replaced. Some of the potential exclusions include tires damaged by:
- Road hazards: Bruises, snags, punctures, cuts and impact damage
- Misapplication, racing, under-inflation, improper maintenance or over-inflation
- Incorrect mounting, balancing and repair
- Chemical corrosion, fire, accident, vandalism or tire alteration
- Weather cracking and minor cosmetic ozone
- Improper storage
- The addition of liquids like balancing substances and water based sealers
Hence, if your BFGoodrich Mud-Terrain T/A KM2 tire is removed from service due to any of the above issues, the manufacturer will not replace it, regardless of the percentage of the original usable tread remaining.
