Volvo XC90: Best Tires

It is often the case that when people go out tire shopping they get sold on the first set of bargain tires that catch their eye. Buying cheap tires can certainly save you some cash but at the end of the day, you want to prioritize a tire that is going to deliver you optimum performance on the road. However, that is not to say that you can’t find some amazing deals on quality tires on the market, as there are tons that are available for the budget shopper - you just want to evaluate the specs of all of your options before you make any commitments.

What you want to consider as you assess the best tires for the Volvo XC90 is which tires are going to suit you best based on price, but also on meeting your on-road driving needs. Tire manufacturers design a wide variety of different tires to perform optimally in different conditions and for different driving styles. Some people prefer to have a tire that is well-rounded that is going to take care of all of their driving without ever needing to be changed - regardless of the weather conditions. For this kind of person, an All-Season tire option is going to be ideal, as many Volvo XC90 drivers purchase their vehicles to be dynamic.

However, you may be the kind of driver that wants to have the best cornering and handling capabilities from their Volvo XC90, which is why a High-Performance tire may be a much more appropriate option. These tires are designed to increase the sports performance of your SUV, which is going to be particularly appealing for drivers that bought the Inscription or Recharge models. Now it is important to understand that there is going to be a trade-off between these two tire categories.

An All-Season tire was primarily designed to handle a variety of different driving conditions and is overall the best option for someone that wants something that is going to be practical and reliable - but at the cost of decreased performance. Whereas most High-Performance tires are not going to be great for dynamic capabilities - given that they are known for increasing the driving performance of your vehicle in stable conditions. Depending on the type of driver that you are and the conditions that you find yourself primarily driving in, you will likely want to select the tire that is best for you based on these categories. To help you understand this further, we are going to take a closer look at the best tires for the Volvo XC90 in more detail.

All-Season Tires

These days, All-Season tires have become the most popular option for most drivers and you will find that more people prefer to drive with them over any other classification. However, this is a somewhat recent development within the auto industry, as All-Season tires have only been widely adopted over the last 20 years or so. When they first came on the scene in the 70s, they tended to lack the ‘All-Season’ capabilities that their name promised. However, due to innovative design in the early 2000s which incorporated silica into the rubber compound, All-Season tires became all the hype.

This is going to be the best option for a Volvo XC90 driver that wants to throw a set of tires on their vehicle without overthinking performance capabilities, as these tires are designed to be as well-rounded as possible for virtually every common on-road condition. Unlike High-Performance summer tires, these are tires that you can rely on in dry, wet, and cold weather, which means that you will likely not need to do seasonal tire changes when the weather turns. With that being said, this is not technically classified as a winter tire, which is why you want to read the specs of each option carefully, as they will vary in snow and ice performance.

Another fantastic quality that All-Season tires have to offer is that they are regarded for their longevity. A lot of people that use their vehicles for standard commutes and casual driving, do not want to be hassled with needing their tires changed every few years. They want a tire that is built to last and will take care of them for as long as possible, which is why many people prefer All-Season tires, as they are designed to typically give you anywhere from 60,000 to 75,000 miles. With this kind of tread life, you will only need to have your tires changed every 6 or 7 years.

With that being said, it is important to understand that All-Season tires do have their limitations. Despite the well-rounded specs and performance capabilities, this type of tire is not going to match up to the driving precision and sports capabilities of a High-Performance option. You can expect cornering, handling, as well as dry and wet performance to be solid but not nearly on the level of a summer tire. If you are looking for something that is well-rounded and balanced, there is really no better option than an All-Season tire. Let’s dive into the best All-Season tires for the Volvo XC90.

Pirelli Scorpion Verde All Season Plus (Grand Touring All-Season Tire)

{{tire-info-with-links="/tire/pirelli-scorpion-verde-all-season-plus"}}

One of the leaders of the tire industry is Pirelli, as they have been manufacturing world-class tires for well over a century and continue to do so to this day. We evaluated a number of great tires from Pirelli, but we found that their All-Season tire ranked the highest in our book for the Volvo XC90.

Pirelli designed this tire to be ideal for luxury crossover SUVs like the XC90. To start, the Volvo XC90 is an SUV, which means that its mile per gallon rating is not going to be quite ideal - especially if you opted for the standard Momentum option and not one of the Recharge models. That means that you might end up spending a considerable amount of money on gas over the years, which the wrong set of tires is only going to make worse.

This tire is classified in the Grand Touring All-Season category, which implies that it is going to deliver you better fuel efficiency - particularly for highway driving. You can expect to have the best optimum mile per gallon rating that your Volvo XC90 is capable of with these Pirelli tires equipped with your vehicle. This is a great option for someone who wants to save on gas and also be more environmentally friendly.

Pirelli’s tire has a fantastic silica compound that is designed to offer top-notch traction in various terrain and driving conditions. This is going to be a perfect All-Season tire for Volvo XC90 drivers that find themselves driving in dry, wet, and snow, as these tires were meant to handle virtually everything.

When tested in dry and wet conditions, this Pirelli tire offered very solid acceleration and stopping power. We were also very satisfied with how well they could handle snow, which is great for drivers that do not want to change up their tires in the winter. If you live in a part of the country that gets an accurate representation of all 4 seasons, these Pirelli tires are going to be the answer to your problems. However, these are not going to be a replacement for a winter tire, which means that you should consider something more heavy-duty for dense snow and ice.

The design of this Grand Touring All-Season tire also enables you to drive on adverse terrain. Given that you are sporting a crossover SUV, you have got a vehicle that should be able to handle rough roads from time to time, which this option is going to be perfect for. Pirelli designed these to handle adverse terrain incredibly well with fantastic durability and traction in these kinds of conditions.

With that being said, many people bought their Volvo XC90 for the luxurious and comfortable interior of the car, which means that they want to have a vehicle that is going to feel as good to drive as it looks on the road. Pirelli designed this tire to be very comfortable - with noise, bumps, and vibrations not being a problem.

Lastly, this is going to be an excellent Grand Touring All-Season tire for a driver that wants to get the most amount of mileage out of their rubber. With these Pirelli tires equipped to your Volvo XC90, you can expect to get at least 65,000 miles of driving in. What is great about this Pirelli tire is that Pirelli has backed this milage estimate with a warranty. So, if you have any technical issues up to 65,000 miles, you are covered. These tires are not the best budget option that you can hope for but for the specs, you really do get what you paid for. You can pick these Pirelli tires up at Discount Tire for $154.00 per piece - with free shipping

Continental CrossContact LX20 (Grand Touring All-Season Tire)

{{tire-info-with-links="/tire/continental-crosscontact-lx-20"}}

When it comes to releasing game-changing tires in recent years, few manufacturers can boast the reputation that Continental has achieved. Across so many different tire classifications, Continental has become a dominant name in the industry - with their CrossContact LX20 being one of the most regarded and best suited for the Volvo XC90 in the Grand Touring All-Season category.

The CrossContact LX20 shines in so many ways and will offer a very well-rounded driving experience to Volvo XC90 drivers. One of the best features of this Grand Touring All-Season tire is its very impressive tread life. Continental’s highly advanced tread design enables this tire to boast an incredible 70,000-mile life expectancy, which is about the best that you could ever hope for as far as tread wear goes. However, if you do not drive your Volvo XC90 on too many adverse roads or conditions, then there is no reason that you can’t squeeze an extra 5,000 or 10,000 miles out of them before you see some serious balding - meaning that you can get upwards of 8 years out of a single set of tires.

The impressive longevity of the CrossContact LX20 is only one of its many great features, as you will also have exceptional traction in both wet and dry conditions. When tested in these conditions, the Volvo XC90 was able to perform with excellent precision for acceleration and braking. This tread compound also gives your SUV better fuel efficiency, which is going to save you on gas in the long run.

Continental’s CrossContact LX20 tire is also going to be a great fit for any driver that has to deal with winter conditions. Your Volvo XC90 is going to have superb traction and reliability in both snow and iced roads, which means that you can rely on a single set of tires to meet all of your driving needs - regardless of the weather. The only thing that you will want to keep in mind is that this tire is not going to be ideal for severe winter conditions, as it will not guarantee optimum performance in dense snow, as traction may start to become less reliable.

This is also a great tire for drivers that want to have a comfortable on-road experience. You will enjoy how quiet the road feels when you drive with these Grand Touring All-Season tires equipped. Continental designed the CrossContact LX20 to be as silent as possible, which is great for people out there that are annoyed by the notorious highway hum that you can get high speeds. However, we did find that there was slight bumpiness in some situations, which was not major but worth mentioning.

The advanced design of this tire also makes it incredibly durable. You can take your Volvo XC90 out on dirt and gravel roads with the absolute best performance with the CrossContact LX20 tires equipped, which is great for people that want to make the most of their SUV’s capabilities.

With all of these incredible specs in mind, one could easily think that these Grand Touring All-Season tires are going to have a pretty big price tag. However, you will be amazed to find out that the CrossContact LX20 is available at Discount Tire for a mere $113.00 per piece - with shipping included! For the specs, performance, and price this is an unbeatable offer and is hands down the best bang for your buck deal that you will find for the Volvo XC90.

Michelin Premier LTX (Grand Touring All-Season Tire)

{{tire-info-with-links="/tire/michelin-premier-ltx"}}

If you are ever on the fence about a tire option on the market, Michelin is a manufacturer that you know you can always count on. Michelin has a lot of excellent tire options available right now but the one that suits the Volvo XC90 the best is going to be their Premier LTX Tire.

This is going to be the most expensive Grand Touring All-Season option for the Volvo XC90, but for the performance capabilities that you get out of this Michelin tire, it is a small price to pay for some.

One feature that we really liked with the Premier LTX Tire is that it is very comfortable. Given the luxurious nature of the Volvo XC90, comfort is going to be a priority for a lot of drivers out there and no tire is going to deliver that better than the Premier LTX Tire. You will be amazed by how quiet your car is when you are on the highway - regardless of how fast you are going. There will be virtually no highway hum and the road will feel smooth as silk - with bumps and vibrations being non-existent.

Moving forward, Michelin aimed to create an All-Season tire that would be versatile for just about every driving condition possible but with emphasis on wet roads. The manufacturer incorporates sunflower oil into their advanced silica compound which gives the Premier LTX Tire world-class wet performance that beats every other option that we mentioned in the Grand Touring All-Season category.

You will be impressed by how reliable your vehicle will perform on wet roads - regardless of wet intensity, which makes hydroplaning an impossibility. The traction that you get in these conditions will also enable your Volvo XC90 to brake and accelerate with absolute precision. This is without a doubt the best tire option for drivers out there that find themselves often driving in wet conditions, as nothing will give you more safety assurance than the Premier LTX.

With that being said, the enhanced wet performance by no means implies that this Michelin tire falls short in dry conditions. You will experience fantastic driving capabilities on dry roads that can only be described as world-class. On top of that, this Grand Touring All-Season tire’s winter performance is on-point and extremely reliable in snow and ice. When tested in these conditions the Volvo XC90 was able to pull through in just about every type of winter condition - including dense snow. Although this is not a substitute for a winter tire, it’s about the best that you could ask for from a Grand Touring All-Season option.

If you are still not sold on this tire, it has got amazing durability and can withstand impact, rugged roads, and adverse terrain. If you want to take your Volvo XC90 on backcountry roads and do so with confidence, the Premier LTX Tire will ensure that you do not get stuck in the mud. If you are planning on doing some serious off-roading, then you may want to get a tire that is designed for this kind of driving, but for a tire of this classification - this is the best of its class.

The only minor drawbacks of this tire are the tread life, as well as the cost. The Premier LTX Tire from Michelin is expected to have a tread life of 60,000 miles. Although this is still very solid, it does not quite match up to the longevity of our other Grand Touring All-Season options. In addition, the hefty $184.00 price tag also makes this option less accessible to the budget shopper. However, if the price is not an option, there is really no better tire for your Volvo XC90 than this. You can get yourself a set of these world-class tires at Discount Tire.

High-Performance Tires

Although a well-rounded option like an All-Season tire seems to be a bit more popular these days, a lot of Volvo XC90 drivers prefer to have an optimum driving experience over a practical one. If that is the case for you, then you are going to want to narrow your search to a High-Performance option. Unlike All-Season tires, High-Performance tires are designed to increase the driving capabilities of your vehicle - primarily in dry and wet performance. You will have improved handling and cornering abilities that no All-Season tire could deliver to your Volvo XC90.

To have the best on-road performance possible, you are going to want to look at summer tires, to begin with. A High-Performance Summer Tire is designed to do one thing - give you the best performance possible in mild and stable conditions. This is a particularly popular tire option among Volvo XC90 drivers that got either the Inscription or Recharge options. These models can boast either 316 horsepower or an incredible 400 horsepower, which means that you are going to have performance capabilities that greatly surpass the standard Momentum option. If you want to make the most of your vehicle's increased power, a High-Performance summer tire is going to be the way to go.

However, despite the increased sports performance that summer tires offer, they do come with their fair share of limitations. These tires are only going to be suitable for summer driving or for regions that have very mild climate conditions all year long. If you attempt to drive with these tires equipped in even light snow and ice conditions, you will find that your performance is going to be way off and completely unreliable, which can pose a serious safety risk. This means that you are going to need to change your tires on a seasonal basis. In addition, High-Performance tires in the summer category are also notorious for having a very short tread life - with 20,000 miles generally being a reasonable figure, which means that longevity is not going to be a feature to hope for.

With that being said, a lot of tire manufacturers have strived to strike a balance between the impressive on-road performance of a summer tire and the practicality of an All-Season option, which is why you can find a variety of different High-Performance All-Season tires that offer the best of both worlds. If you are on the fence about performance and practicality, you really can’t go wrong by choosing the middle ground. Let’s dive right into the best High-Performance tires for the Volvo XC90.

General Grabber UHP (High-Performance Summer Tire)

{{tire-info-with-links="/tire/general-grabber-uhp"}}

General is a highly-regarded tire manufacturer from the United States - with some excellent options out there in the High-Performance category. However, we found that in the summer tire classification, the Grabber UHP offered the Volvo XC90 the best driving performance.

With that in mind, this is a summer tire through and through. You can expect top-of-the-line dry and wet performance with these equipped with your Volvo XC90. Your acceleration and stopping power will be incredibly reliable - much more than that of a standard All-Season option. General designed this tire to be particularly good in wet conditions, which means that you will have a very safe experience on the road when in the rain.

However, you will really feel the difference when you test your vehicle’s cornering and handling abilities, as they will be a serious upgrade from virtually any other tire that does not fall in the summer classification.

You will also enjoy how comfortable your Volvo XC90 is when you are on the highway. There will be virtually no bumps, vibrations, or noise - regardless of how fast you drive. However, you may find that your durability is not quite as on-point as some of the All-Season tires that we mentioned, which means that you should approach adverse terrains with more caution.

In addition, given that this is a summer tire you can expect the Grabber UHP to have incredibly spotty performance in winter conditions. When tested in snow and ice, the performance capabilities were incredibly lackluster, which means that you cannot rely on this tire for winter driving at all. If you live somewhere with a mild climate or are fine with changing your tires seasonally, you can’t go wrong.

Much like with most summer tires, the tread life is going to be pretty short, which means that longevity is not going to be a feature of the Grabber UHP. General has not marked this summer tire with an expected tread life, as to how long it lasts will be primarily dependent on how you drive.

If you want to push your Volvo XC90 to its limits and make the most of its sports performance (especially if you bought the Recharge model) - then you can expect to get a tread life that is just 15,000 miles, which is incredibly short. However, if you are able to drive with more care and consideration, you can probably get this up to 20,000. All in all, don’t expect to get more than 2 years out of these summer tires.

What is great about General’s Grabber UHP summer tire is that is quite affordable and accessible to the budget shopper. You can pick yourself up a set of these High-Performance Summer tires for $144.00 at Discount Tire, which is the best price that you will find in this category.

Michelin Latitude Sport (High-Performance Summer Tire)

{{tire-info-with-links="/tire/michelin-latitude-sport"}}

Michelin is back with another world-class tire for the Volvo XC90. The Michelin Latitude Sport tire is a fantastic summer tire option for drivers out there that truly want to take the sport’s capabilities of their crossover SUV to a new level.

This Michelin tire truly stands out in the High-Performance Summer Tire category due to its advanced tread compound, which enables increased driving performance that surpasses virtually every other summer tire out there for the Volvo XC90.

To start, you will have phenomenal cornering and handling abilities, that simply shatter the competition. If you are upgrading to the Latitude Sport summer tires from a standard All-Season option, you will be blown away by the improved capabilities that your Volvo XC90 has. So much so, that you will forget you are driving an SUV at times, which will particularly be the case for those of you that opted for the 400 horsepower Recharge models.

Michelin’s advanced rubber and tread compound will also be reflected in the Latitude Sport tire’s amazing dry and wet performance. You can brake and accelerate with these equipped with your Volvo XC90 with the highest level of precision. We found that the traction was so good for both of these conditions, that you really can’t go wrong - regardless of whether you live in a hot or wet climate.

If comfort is an important quality for you, these summer tires will not let you down, as you will experience a smooth ride that is free of bumps and vibrations - no matter what speed you are driving at. Now, the tread life expectancy of the Latitude Sport summer tires is set at 20,000 miles by Michelin. However, if you want to drive your Volvo XC90 like a sports car, then you can expect this number to be shorter, as it can drop to 15,000 miles.

However, Michelin has remarkably backed these up with a warranty up to 20,000 miles, which is practically unheard of for a summer tire. So, if they happen to fall short of their promise, Michelin has got you covered.

The biggest drawback of these High-Performance Summer Tires is that they are incredibly expensive. If you want top-of-the-line High-Performance capabilities out of your Volvo XC90, then you need to be ready to pay for them. You can currently get yourself a set of Michelin’s Latitude Sport summer tires for $267.00, which is considerably more than anything that we have mentioned. This is not a tire for the budget shopper, but if money is not an option - you will be amazed by the enhanced performance that your vehicle will have.

Nitto NT421Q (High-Performance All-Season Tire)

{{tire-info-with-links="/tire/nitto-nt421q"}}

If you are torn between choosing a High-Performance Summer Tire and a standard All-Season option, then you should highly consider going with something that combines the specs of both. A High-Performance All-Season tire will give you excellent performance - while at the same time giving you practicality and reliability.

In this regard, Nitto’s NT421Q option is going to do your Volvo XC90 justice. This tire has excellent cornering and handling abilities that will trump anything you could hope for from a regular All-Season tire. You can also expect a fantastic dry and wet performance that gives your vehicle very reliable stopping power and acceleration. This tire handled both conditions very well but it performed particularly well in wet conditions - with hydroplaning being non-existent.

However, you will also be amazed by how well this vehicle performs in the snow. When we tested Nitto’s High-Performance All-Season tire in winter conditions, we found that it had excellent traction in light snow and ice. So much so, that it was even able to pull through the densest snow conditions that it was tested in. This is going to be a fantastic option for a Volvo XC90 driver that lives in a part of the country that gets legitimate winter weather.

Nitto’s tire is also very comfortable, which is great for Volvo XC90 drivers that want to have the quietest and smoothest ride possible. With that being said, our favorite characteristic of the NT421Q is its longevity. Nitto has labeled these tires with a remarkable tread life of 75,000 miles, which is simply profound.

If you are able to drive with care, you should be able to get upwards of 85,000 miles out of them before they need to be changed, which means that you will only need to change your tires every 7 or 8 years. If you want a tire that is going to last, there is really no better option for the Volvo XC90. If you have any issues with the tire before they hit their tread life expectancy, Nitto has backed them up with a warranty - so you know you are covered.

One might easily think that with the longevity of these tires combined with the specs that their price is going to be through the roof. However, you will be happy to know that you can get these High-Performance All-Season tires for your Volvo XC90 for just $147.00 at Discount Tire. Although this is more than what you may want to pay for a budget option, you most certainly get your money’s worth with these tires.

Yokohama Parada Spec-X (High-Performance All-Season Tire)

{{tire-info-with-links="/tire/yokohama-parada-spec-x"}}

Next in line in the High-Performance All-Season category is the Parada Spec-X from Yokohama. This Japanese tire manufacturer has made an amazing tire that is perfect for the Volvo XC90 - with stellar driving performance and All-Season versatility.

You can expect only the best cornering and handling abilities with these equipped with your vehicle. This will also be reflected in dry and wet performance, as your tires will stick to the road like glue - with braking and acceleration being simply on-point.

When you have to suddenly brake on wet roads in intense rains, you will be amazed by how precise your Volvo XC90 responds, as hydroplaning is not going to be a problem. This tire is also highly regarded for its comfort, as Yokohama aimed to create something that would be smooth and quiet - regardless of how fast you like to drive.

However, we did find that the winter performance did not qutie match up to the capabilities that Nitto’s tire offered. In light snow and ice, the Parada Spec-X had decent performance but was not optimal. However, when tested in dense snow, the performance started to become noticeably lackluster, which is going to be a red flag for those of you who reside in colder parts of the country.

In addition, Yokohama has not marked these with a tread life expectancy. Given the classification of this tire, we can expect a figure of around 50,000 miles, which is still very solid. You can get yourself a set of these Yokohama tires at Discount Tire for $143.00 per piece.
